Iceland 2012

We are in Iceland again for a few days. Not quite so much snow as the last time we were here, and not quite so cold as the wind is less strong. Very cloudy today but last night we were treated to the Northern Lights above our hotel. Cold to stand outside, at -10c, but totally worth it. Suspect it may be too cloudy this evening for any viewing but we have two more nights to try again.

Returning has only made us even more keen to come again in the summer when the mountain roads are open. We forded one measly stream today and I'm hankering for something bigger in something more capable.

One of my favourites

Peru this time. A town called Yanque near Colca Canyon. We'd been to Colca the day before and stopped here for lunch but earlier in the morning we'd passed through Yanque where local children were performing traditional dances in the street.

One of favourites

Tofino Bay, Vancouver Island. We'd had a stunning drive across the island to Tofino Bay the day before in readiness for a whale watching trip. This was our anniversary and our suite opened right onto this beach. A magical morning.

One of my favourites

I've amassed quite a few photographs over the years and recently been going back and tidying the growing digital archive. With storage so cheap I'd wondered whether it was worth it but so many of them will never see the light of day it seems pointless to keep the really duff ones. In doing so I've been rediscovering shots I'd largely forgotten about so starting today I'm going to post a regular favourite of mine.

Improved Slideshow support

Been updating some of the slideshow links on pages that were previously delivered through embedding the slideshow HTML from Flickr itself.

However, I've just deployed a new RapidWeaver add on called Cool Iris which is much more pleasing, another great Stack from Joe Workman

There are updated Cool Iris shows for our Cambodia, Iceland, and recent USA trips.

Hornby Restoration

I have quite a collection of Hornby O Gauge tin plate clockwork railway stock from before WWII that belonged to my Dad. A lot of these models suffered from metal fatigue that manifested itself in perished wheels, looks just like perished rubber.

One of the models is of the Flying Scotsman (thought they wheel assignment is technically wrong) and in all the time I've ever known them this model had perished main driver wheels. Recently I've managed to source from eBay a duplicate model in much poorer condition except that the driving wheels were unaffected. Today I've swapped the clockwork unit and wheels - good as new.

And I've put together a very rough time-lapse of the surgery you can watch too….

At last an update

Good couple of months since I've posted here. I'm still working my way through photographs from last years holiday to Cambodia!

Still, a few more have been added to Flickr! which completes the set. Now all I need to do is get round to this year.
